We're really excited about starting this new corps, in an area that is rich with Marching Music. Drum Corps will allow you to see more of the country, learn new skills, and be a better musician. Imagine being able to come back to Marching Band Camp with a whole summer of playing and marching! We welcome to our Staff new instructor Dale Crawford (Rifle/Colorguard Instructor). His motto: I can teach a monkey to throw a rifle. So if you like bananas......... ! A New Drum Corps in Marysville, Washington The Northern Sound Drum Corps is the second of the two new Open Class drum corps that we are creating for the 2012 season. This is part of a concentrated effort to provide drum corps to more young people in more Northwest communities. While the Cascades Drum Corps provide a great experience, travelling 13,000 miles in six weeks of competition; the expense, rigors, and age requirements limit members to a select group of musicians and performers. The two new Open Corps will have a less rigorous schedule, and a tuition/tour costs that is far more affordable at about $900 for the year (depending on number of members), which can even be reduced with fundraising. Our two new Open Corps will compete in the DCI NW tour, along with a second tour to compete in California. In 2013, our intent is to sponsor an additional show late in the season, a NW Invitational show for Open Class corps, thus extending the West Coast drum corps season up to August. The Northern Sound Drum Corps is progressing rapidly towards its first performance. The core instructional staff and support team are in place. Brass instruments, drums, and uniforms have been obtained. Our current focus is to seek a solution for the front ensemble (pit), plus we are looking to acquire an equipment trailer. The application process for official recognition by DCI for Open Class standing begins this month for both the Northern Sound Drum Corps and The Ascent Drum Corps from Vancouver, WA. Drum Corps International has a rigorous review and approval process to assure that new corps are financially secure, have a qualified instruction staff, and have a membership sufficient to field a viable corps. We appreciate the support from anyone in our communities to assist in creating this new drum corps. If you can volunteer your time, contribute financially, or have helpful suggestions we will welcome your support. With the support of the community, we believe the time right for the growth of the drum corps activity in the Northwest. For the Schedule, click the Schedule link, in the left column!
